組合機床是根據(jù)工件加工需要,以大量通用部件為基礎,配以少量專用部件組成的一種高效專用機床,主要用于平面加工和孔加工兩類工序,按通用部件類型,組合機床分為大型和小型兩大類,用大型通用部件組成的機床稱為大型組合機床,用小型通用部件組成的機床稱為小型組合機床;按配置型式又分為單工位和多工位機床兩大類,單工位機床又有單面、雙面、三面和四面幾種;多工位機床則有移動工作臺式、回轉工作臺式、中央立柱式和回轉鼓輪式等配置型式。
由于組合機床工序的高度集中,即在一臺機床上可同時完成一種或幾種不同工序加工,因此適應了產量大、精度高的生產要求,并且克服了萬能機床結構復雜、勞動強度大、生產效率低、精度不易保證的缺點,以及專用機床通用性差、不適應現(xiàn)代技術迅速發(fā)展、產品經常更新的要求.所以,組合機床及其自動線已廣泛應用到汽車、柴油機、電動機、儀器儀表以及軍工產品等的生產上,并顯示出巨大的優(yōu)越性。
