(2)It is + adj. +to do sth. 2. Understand the following sentence pattern correctly: Where someone is born and what a person looks like is not as important as what he or she grows up to be. Teaching Methods: 1. Question-and-answer activity to help the students to go through with the whole passage. 2. Careful reading to find out the detailed information about the passage. 3. Pair work or group work to make every student work in class. Teaching Aids: 1. a puter 2. a tape recorder Teaching Procedures: FStep Ⅰ. Greetings Greet the whole class as usual. FStep Ⅱ.Revision T: In the last period I told you to talk about paintings or films with your partner. Now I’ll ask two pairs of students to act out their dialogues. Now, the first pair, Li Ming and Wu Dong. You two, please. S1: (holding a picture in his hand) Look at this picture, Wu Dong. It’s a famous picture all over the world. Do you know the title of the picture? S2: Mona Lisa, I think. I like it very much. S1: Why do you like it? S2: The woman in the picture looks so quiet, beautiful and kind. The first is called “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s” Stone and the second is called “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”.It tells about a boy named Harry Potter with talent for magic. He attends a school for witches and wizards called Hogwarts, where he es across many strange creatures and adventures. From the film I know Harry Potter is a very clever and brave boy. T: Do you know who plays the role of Harry Potter? S5: Sorry, I don’t know. T: Daniel Alan Radciffe does. He was born in Fulham, England on 23 July, 1989. His nickname is Dan. He once played the part of young David in the film “David Copperfield”in xx.He also acted in the film “The Tailor of Panama”made in xx. FStep Ⅳ.Reading T: Today we’ll read a passage about the film “Harry Potter”.First, let’s have a discussion. Now work in groups of four and discuss the questions above the reading text. (Teacher gives students some time to have a discussion, then asks some of them to give their opinions.) T: Now read the passage by yourselves. After a while I’ll ask you to answer some questions. (Teacher gives students five minutes to read the passage carefully. T: Who’d like to answer the first question? S6: Because his parents are dead and he lives with a family that treats him badly. I think reading novels can help us learn about the real world because novels are based on real life and reflect our society. T: There are some words and expressions we should learn to use. And there are also some sentence patterns that we should master. Now look at the sentences on the screen, please. 1. She is a warm-hearted woman.She is always ready to help those in trouble. 2. There used to be a temple in the village. Wood can be used to make desks and chairs. I have got/been used to getting up early. 3. The good news made all of us happy. He has a strange way to make his classes lively and interesting. 4. In the forest we came across scores of monkeys. In the course of the experiments, they came across a series of new problems. 5. They fought against all kinds of difficulties when they were in trouble. 6. He succeeded in making the experiment. 7. Good friends share (in) hardships as well as joys. 8. It is popular for teenegers to use cell phones. 9.Many westerners believe in God. I don’t believe in him. (Teacher explains the sentences on the screen. Meanwhile, teacher writes the language points on the blackboard.) Now look at the third line in the last paragraph. This is a plex sentence. (Bb: Where someone is born and what a person looks like is not as important as what he or she subject clauses subject clause grows up to be.)There are two subject clauses “Where someone is born and what a person looks like” in the main clause. There is an adverbial clause “as important as what he or she grows up to be”.The subject of the adverbial clause is also a sentence“what he or she grows up to be”.The predicate “is important” in the adverbial clause is omitted. Is that clear? S8: Sorry, Miss Gao. I don’t know what is the subject clause. Could you explain it to us? T: Usually we use a noun or a pronoun or a phrase as the subject of a sentence. If we use a clause as the subject, we call it “subject clause”,like “object clause” we have learnt. Do you understand? Ss: Yes. FStep Ⅴ.Consolidation T: OK. So much for the study of the language points. Now look at Ex.2 on Page 81.Read these sentences and decide whether they are true or false according to the article we’ve just read. Write the letter “T” if the sentence is right. Write “F” if it is wrong, then correct the error and give the right information. (Teacher gives students some time to prepare. They can discuss with their partners if they are not sure. Then teacher asks some students to give the answers.) Suggested answers: 1. (F) Harry Potter is a world famous writer. Correction: Rowling is a world famous writer. 2. (F)Harry Potter was born in a rich family and grew up with his mother and father. Correction: Harry Potter was the son of a wizard and a witch and grew up with his aunt and uncle. 3. (T) Harry Potter is a handsome boy with a scar on his forehead. 4. (F) Harry goes to an ordinary school. Correction: Harry goes to a special school called Hogwarts School of witchcraft and Wizardary. 5. (T) Harry learns about the real world at Hogwarts. 6. (F) Harry discovers that it is easy to do the right thing. Correction: Harry discovers that it is not easy to do the right thing. T: Now I’ll play the tape for you to listen and follow. While listening and reading, pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation. FStep Ⅵ. Summary and Homework T: In this class, we’ve read a passage about the film “Harry Potter”.We’ve also learned some useful words, expressions and some sentence patterns.
