Learn the following words and phrases: creat, scene, script, popcorn, academy, studio, work on, take off, blockbuster, cut…in pieces, dinosaur, go wrong, follow-up, cruelty, win over, in the end Teaching Important Points: 1. How to make the students understand the reading text better. 2. Learn and master the following phrases: work on, take off, cut…in pieces, hit, go wrong, win over, in the end, owe…to… Teaching Difficult Points: 1. The differences between the following pairs of words or phrases: be afraid of doing sth./be afraid to do sth., high/highly 2. Learn the following sentence pattern: After that it still took seven years before they finally got married. Teaching Methods: 1. Fast reading to get a general idea of the text. 2. Question-and-answer activity to get the detailed information in the text. 3. Explanation for students to master some language points. Teaching Aids: 1. a tape recorder 2. a puter Teaching Procedures: FStep Ⅰ.Greetings and Revision Greet the whole class as usual. T: First let’s revise the new words we learnt in the last period. Please take out a piece of paper and let’s have a dictation. (Teacher collects the papers after the dictation is over.) FStep Ⅱ.Pre-reading T: Do you like making a film? Suppose you are a director, how would you make a film? Can you think of one scene in your film? Please have a discussion in groups of four and discuss the two questions on the screen and then write a short dialogue and act it out. Do you understand? Ss: Yes. T: You can begin now. 1. What would the scene be like and what happens in it? 2. Who are the main actors in that scene and what do they do? F(Teacher gives students five minutes to prepare, then asks a group of students to act out the scene.) Step Ⅲ.Reading T: Please look at the three pictures in the book. The first one is a picture of the big white shark. It is taken from the film “Jaws”.The second one is a picture of ET which is taken from the film called ET. Now look at the third picture. It’s a picture of dinosaurs. Do you know what film it is taken from? S1:The film is called “Jurassic Park”.I have seen it. T: You are right. The three films are all made by the same director. Who is he? S1: Sorry, I don’t know the name of the director, but I know he is American. S2: His name is Steven Spielberg, I think. T: Quite right. Steven Spielberg is a famous director in America. He made several films before he was 16.In the beginning he created scenes with toys, but later he wrote scripts and worked with actors .He also showed them to people who had to buy tickets while his sister sold them popcorn. Now look at the reading text on Page 31.Please read the passage quickly to get a general idea and try to answer the questions on the screen. 1. How many films are mentioned in the passage? What are the names of the films? 2. What are Steven Spielberg’s later films about? (Teacher gives students three minutes to read the passage and then asks two students to answer the questions.) Suggested answers: 1.Five.They are “Jaws”“ET”“Jurassic Park”,“Schindler’s List”and “Saving Private Ryan”. 2. His later films are about the cruelty of war. T: Now read the passage once again and then answer the questions on the screen. This time, you should read slowly and carefully. (Teacher shows the questions on the screen.) 1. What was Spielberg’s dream? 2. Why did Spielberg study English instead of film? 3.Why were people who saw the film “Jaws”afraid to swim in the sea? 4. How important is his family to Spielberg’s career? 5. What have you learnt from reading about Spielberg? (Teacher gives students five more minutes to read the passage and then asks some students to answer the questions.) Suggested answers: 1. His dream was to go to the Film Academy. 2. Because his grades were not good enough to go to the Film Academy. 3. Because they remembered the scenes in which people were eaten by the shark. 4. Spielberg says he owes much of his success and happiness to his wife and children. That’s the secret of his success. 5.After reading the passage about Spielberg I have learnt that we can succeed so long as we make up our minds to do something and try hard to do it well. There is a saying.“Where there is a will, there is a way.” FStep Ⅳ.Study for the Language Points T: There are some words, phrases that are difficult to understand. Now find them out in the passage. (Teacher writes the words and phrases on the Bb: creat, work on, take off, cut…into/in pieces, hit, go wrong, win over, in the end, owe…to… in all) T: There are pairs of words or phrases that are similar to each other. We should tell the differences between them. And there’s also a sentence pattern that we should master.(Bb: be afraid to do sth./be afraid of(doing)sth., high/highly, etc After that it still took seven years before they finally got married.) Now I’ll explain them to you. Look at the examples on the screen, please. (Teacher shows the following on the screen and begins to explain then to the Ss.) 1. His career in diplomacy began to take off in his early thirties. 3. First cut the apples in/into small pieces. 4. The ball hit him in the eye. The district was hit by a violent earthquake on November 30. 5. Has anything gone wrong with the puter? Fish soon goes bad in hot weather. The old man has gone deaf. 6. We have won him over to our side. 7. The American Civil War lasted four years before the north won in the end. 8. She owes her progress to her hard work. We owe all our achievements to the wise leadership of our party. 9. We are not afraid of difficulties. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes when you speak English. She is afraid to go out alone at night. 10. The plane flew high in the sky. He is a highly skilled worker. 11. There were twelve of us in all for dinner. That’s £5.40 in all. 12. It was a long time before I got to sleep last night. It will be four years before we meet again FStep Ⅴ.Consolidation T: Now let’s listen to the tape. While listening, pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation. (Teacher plays the tape for students to listen.) T: Now let’s fill in the chart on Page 32 with the information from the text and tell what some of Steven Spielberg’s most famous films are about. (Teacher gives students some minutes to prepare, then asks some students to give the answers.) Suggested answers: 1. Jaws (1975) is about a big shark that attacks and eats swimmers. 2. ET (1982) is about a little creature that es from outer space and wants to go home. 3. Jurassic Park (1993) is about an island where a very rich man keeps all kinds of dinosaurs. Schindler’s List (1993) is about the cruelty of war/ a German who saved thousand of Jewish people from being killed in the war. Saving Private Ryan (xx) is also about the cruelty of war/ an American captain who led his team to search for a soldier named Ryan.
