To get students to talk about the pictures To listen to the beginnings of five stories Teaching Importance and Difficulties: To get students to distinguish the category of some popular stories Teaching Aids: puter, cassette Teaching Procedures: Step 1 Lead-in Today we’ll have Unit 16, Module 6. for the first period, we should know what we’ll do in this unit. Please look at the box: In this unit you will … ● Talk about and tell stories. ● Listen to stories and information about names. ● Read extracts from a life story, a position and an article. ● Write a story. ● Learn about the Past Perfect. And now please look at the title: 16 Stories. Do you like to read stories? What kind of stories would you prefer? Good. Now let’s look at Ex.1. Can you recognize the characters in the drawings? ( Students may discuss them in Chinese.) A. Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective from the story A Study in Scarlet (血字研究), written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes solves crime mysteries by using his incredible brain and powers of observation so that he became the idol of English people in their hearts just like Baozheng in Chinese. B. Record of a Journey to the West, a fictious story by Wu Chengen, a writer in Ming Dynasty. C. Robin Hood and Maid Marion The legend of Robin Hood, an outlaw (綠林大盜) who robbed the rich to give to the poor, developed around the thirteen century in Britain. D. Lu Zhishen beat Zheng Guanxi in drunkenness, from the story of “All Men are Brothers” written by Shi Naian and Luo Guanzhong, novelists in the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty. Step 2 Practice Ask: What kinds of stories do the four pictures belong to ? Try to answer me in English. You may refer to the Key Words of Ex.1 as a reference. Answers: A) detective story B) fairy tale C) adventure story D) historical stories Step 3 Listening 1) Listen once to the tape and identify the type of the story. Before listening, teacher can give several relatively difficult words to students like “abandoned, system, planet, beach, truck, handkerchief, murder, princess, Chicago, horrible”. 2) Do Ex.3. Let students deal with this exercise on their own. When checking their answers, encourage them to give reasons for their answers, and, if there is disagreement, to argue for their point of view. Explain that there could be two possible answers for some of the beginnings of the stories. Answers: 1. a horror story 2. science fiction 3. a true story 4. a detective story 5. a fairy tale Step 4 Questionaire If time permits, a questionaire can be carried out in class, based on Ex.4.
