It is about the country singer, Jan Howard, and it happened in the mid 1950s. You can read about it in her autobiography(自傳), Sunshine and Shadow. She suffered a lot with her three children, two of whom were babies. She was forced to leave her husband because he didn’t care about the family. At one point she suffered a nervous breakdown due to his cruel and uncaring behavior. She took her children with her and decided to leave their home, but didn’t know her destination. This all took place in a small town in Kansas, called Frontenac. She had very little gas in the tank and no money at all and she didn’t even manage to make it out of Frontenac. As she used up the gas she got into a panic(驚慌). She then went to a house, not knowing the owner. She "put her pride in her pocket" and went to the door. After she explained her situation to an old lady who answered the door, the lady asked her husband to help Jan carry the children into the house. These kind people allowed her to stay for two weeks until she received some money in the mail from a relative. They fed and cared for Jan and her children. This is one of the most exciting acts of kindness I have ever e across in my fifty years. These angels were named Henry and Sarah and they would always be warmly remembered by me for what they did for Jan and her children. 56. What is the passage mainly about? A. A singer’s autobiography. B. The life of an old couple. C. An act of kindness. D. The difficulties Jan met. 57. What happened to Jan Howard in Frontenac? A. She found a friendly couple as she had expected. B. She didn’t have enough money to go on with her journey. C. She couldn’t live with her children. D. She suffered a lot because her husband left her. 58. From the passage we learn that the author ________. A. believes Jan Howard met with angels B. doesn’t know the old couple’s names C. doesn’t know where the old couple lived D. thinks highly of the old couple B Open Letter to an Editor I had an interesting conversation with a reporter recently—one who works for you. In fact, he’s one of your best reporters. He wants to leave. Your reporter gave me a copy of his resume(簡(jiǎn)歷) and photocopies of six stories that he wrote for you. The headlines showed you played them proudly. With great enthusiasm, he talked about how he finds issues, approaches them, and writes about them, which tells me he is one of your best. I’m sure you would hate to lose him. Surprisingly, your reporter is not unhappy. In fact, he told me he really likes his job. He has a great assignment, and said you run a great paper. He said it would be easy for you to keep him. He appreciates the responsibility you’ve given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys his freedom. So why is he looking for a way out? He talked to me because he wants his editors to demand so much of him. He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights. The reporter believes that good stories spring from(來(lái)源于) good questions, but his editors usually ask how long the story will be, when it will be in, where it can play, and what the budget is. He longs for conversations with an editor who will help turn his good ideas into great ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he’s doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for your paper. That’s what you want for him, too, isn’t it? So your reporter has set me thinking. Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists—everyone—is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach their potential(潛能). If we can’t do it, they’ll find someone who can. 59. What does the writer think of the reporter? A. Optimistic. B. Imaginative. C. Ambitious. D. Proud. 60. What does the reporter want most from his editors in their talks? A. Finding the news value of his stories. B. Giving him financial support. C. Helping him to find issues. D. Improving his good ideas. 61. Who probably wrote the letter? A. An editor. B. An artist. C. A reporter. D. A reader. 62. The letter aims to remind editors that they should _____. A. keep their best reporters at all costs B. give more freedom to their reporters C. be aware of their reporters’ professional development D. appreciate their reporters’ working styles and attitudes C Some people are pessimistic(悲觀的) when they think about the future. They say that a hundred years from now, we will have used most of the earth’s resources. We will have polluted our seas badly, and be unable to eat fish from them. We will have made the air so dirty that we will need to wear masks. The world’s population will have doubled, and we will have used all the countryside for housing; there will be no farmland left. Other people believe that Man adapts very easily. They have a different idea of the future. How, in their views, will people be living in a hundred years’ time? One architect believes that Man will move off the land. He suggests that the city of the future will be a huge, pyramid-shaped building, which will be floating on the surface of the sea. About 5,000 families will be living there, and the building will contain shops and schools as well as homes. By living on the sea, we will give the farmers more land to grow crops. As for oil, people will no longer need it: we will be heating our homes with power from the sun. And we will not be short of minerals, because there are plenty under our oceans. At the moment, we do not have the technology to get them out. But, in a hundred years’ time, the optimists say, the new sea cities will be using these resources. What will be in the shops in the year 3000? What will people be wearing? How will people be traveling? Scientists who make predictions about the future suggest that, by the year 3000, shops will no longer exist. puters will have replaced them, and people will order goods from home. People will be wearing very light, thin clothes. By this time, scientists will have invented a fabric that keeps us cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather. As for travel, the experts say that most people will be using public transport. Electric cars will be traveling through the streets day and night. Anybody will be able to stop one and use it. An interesting picture. Unfortunately, we will not be there to see if these predictions e true. 63. Pessimists believe that in the future ______ . A. the seas and oceans will be full of houses B. we’ll have used up all the resources C. we will not have enough fish to eat from the seas D. we’ll have polluted the air so badly that it’ll be impossible for us to breathe without masks. 64. Optimists suggest that ______ . A. all the land will be too polluted to be cropped on B. pyramids will be the most monly-used houses C. people will be using the power from the sun instead of oil D. we will be short of materials even though we get them from under the oceans 65. Scientists have made the predictions EXCEPT ______ . A. electric cars will be going along the streets continuously B. the resources under the oceans will never be used up C. people will order from home D. people won’t suffer from cold any longer It’s not just women who wear skirts. 66 In Scotland, men wear a kind of skirt called kilt.
