A “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”—Albert Einstein If you have a kid with special needs in the school system, chances are you have e across that saying hanging on a classroom wall. My fiveyearold daughter Syona has cerebral palsy(腦癱) and it means, bined with her munication challenges and sight problems, that standard assessments (and by “standard”, I mean the ones used to assess kids with special needs) arent always an accurate measure of her abilities. By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26yearold teacher in Jacksonville, Florida, who starts his special education class by calling up each student individually to give them much admiration and a high five. I couldnt help but be reminded of Syonas teacher and how he supports each kid in a very similar way. Ulmer recently shared a video of his teaching experience. “I have seen their confidence and selfworth increase rapidly,” he said. All I could think was: How lucky these students are to have such a inspirational teacher. Syonas teacher has an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: awesome. Her teacher doesnt focus on what cant be done—she focuses on what can be done. Over the past several months, my husband Dilip and I have seen Syonas confidence increase tenfold. She uses words she wouldnt have thought of using before. She recently told me about her classmates trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try. I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home. Weve recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all possess. If we are reminded of our strengths on a regular basis, we will bee increasingly confident about progress and success. Ulmers reach as a teacher goes far beyond the walls of his classroom. In fact, he teaches all of us to take a moment and truly appreciate the strengths of an important person in our lives. By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26yearold teacher in Jacksonville,F(xiàn)lorida, who starts his special education class by calling up each student individually to give them much admiration and a high five.(第三段第一句) 分析:該句為主從復(fù)合句。該句中who引導(dǎo)非限制性定語從句,補(bǔ)充說明先行詞Chris Ulmer;句中the 26yearold teacher in Jacksonville,F(xiàn)lorida為Chris Ulmer 的同位語。 1.What does the underlined “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.The cerebral palsy with Syona. B.The saying on a classroom wall. C.The standard for kids with special needs. D.The accurate measure of Syonas abilities. 根據(jù)第二段第二句中的“My fiveyearold daughter Syona has cerebral palsy(腦癱) and it means, bined with her munication challenges and sight problems”可知,it指代“Syona has cerebral palsy(腦癱)”,故A項正確。 2.What can we learn about Chris Ulmer? A.He is Syonas favorite teacher. B.He helps increase his students confidence. C.He uses videos to teach his students. D.He asks his students to help each other. 根據(jù)第三段倒數(shù)第二句中的“I have seen their confidence and selfworth increase rapidly”可知,Chris Ulmer的教學(xué)能幫助他的學(xué)生快速提高自信和自我價值感,故B項正確。 3.Why did Syona feel very pleased in the fourth paragraph? A.She has developed a positive attitude. B.Her mother knew what she expressed. C.Her progress was appreciated by her parents. D.She had been to Ecuador with her classmate. 根據(jù)第四段最后一句“She recently told me about her classmates trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try”可知,由于Syona的媽媽在Syona第一次嘗試時就理解了Syona的意思,故Syona感到非常自豪,故B項正確。 4.What change has taken place in the authors family? A.They invite Ulmers students to their home. B.They visit Ulmers classroom regularly. C.They feel grateful to people in their lives. D.They give each other praise every day. 根據(jù)第五段第一、二句“I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home. Weve recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all possess”可知,我們模仿特教老師Chris Ulmer的教學(xué)方法,在家里互相表揚(yáng)對方,故D項正確。 B Belgium is the land of music festivals. A.Most of us are pretty stubborn. B.There is no doubt that change is necessary. C.But its best to avoid getting into an argument. D.Being sensitive to criticism leads you nowhere. E.It challenges the way you believe people see you. F.Give yourself a chance to really take in the information and evaluate it. G.The initial moment you hear it may not be the best time to ask for more details. 2.F 根據(jù)空前的“dont immediately allow your emotions to get the better of you,but rather, take a moment to consider whether the criticism is at all accurate”可知,空處應(yīng)講給自己一個機(jī)會真正吸收這些信息并對其進(jìn)行評估。 4.A 根據(jù)空后的“And it may be because of a concept called‘cognitive dissonance’ that can prevent us from changing even when thats what we need most”及本段小標(biāo)題可知,A項“我們大部分人都很倔強(qiáng)”符合語境。 5.G 根據(jù)空后的“Your emotions will be running high, and you may not be particularly receptive to extra information”并結(jié)合上文可知,空處應(yīng)講最開始聽到批評時不適合問更多的細(xì)節(jié),故G項符合語境。 Dear Bill, How time flies!I went back to school and begin my lesson last month. It will be ten months before I attend the College Entrance Examination, that makes me worried.I failed pass the English test last term because of I had difficulty with it.I will never give up and determine to give myself the second chance to pass them.I will ask my teachers and friends for advices on how to improve it and work out a detailed plan.Besides,I will make fully use of time.Do you have any good ideas?Tell me or I will be grateful to you. Im looking forward to from you. 第二處:that改為which?? fail to do sth. 第五處:the改為a?? 第六處:them改為it?? make full use of“充分利用”。 第九處:or改為and。 “祈使句+and+句子”,and表示順承關(guān)系;“祈使句+or+句子”,or表示“否則”。 When Dad told me I was going to take a scuba diver training course, I was really excited.I thought I’d be like those people on TV, __1__ (play) with fish. In the pool, Rob, my instructor, demanded that we do what he did.One of the drills __2__ (be) to take our masks off at the bottom of the deep end, replace them, __3__ clear them of water.I wasn’t doing that because I couldn’t open my eyes underwater or keep water out of my nose.I __4__ (terrify) and made excuse after excuse about __5__ I couldn’t do it.Rob walked over and said, “Alaya, you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.Nobody is forcing you.” Though I said I wasn’t going to do it, my __6__ (foot) carried me toward the pool. With my eyes tightly __7__ (close), I dived in and made my way to __8__ other end.The water felt unnatural against my face.I __9__ (quick) threw on my mask and started clearing it of water.Rob gave me thumbs up.I learned a big lesson: there is nothing to fear but fear __10__ (it). 3.a(chǎn)nd 根據(jù)語境可知,take off, replace和clear是三個連續(xù)的動作,故填連詞and。 4.was terrified sb.is/was terrified表示“某人感到害怕”,再結(jié)合下文的made excuse可知,應(yīng)填was terrified。
