B My mother has always lived by some simple rules: Go to church every Sunday, help people in need ,and don’t worry about unchangeable things. These simple rules have allowed her to live a content life, and in doing so, she sets an example for her children to follow. However, I had broken all of these rules by the time I set off for college. It was September, and I should have been ecstatic as I stood on my college campus and embarked my new independent life. However, I was just quietly crying .I had never been away from home without family. My mom hugged me, “Little girl, we’ll e back to get you next weekend and you can e home for a visit!” My homesickness made my freshman year in college difficult, and I forted myself by throwing myself into my academics. I spent all my time studying, including weekends when everyone else attended parties .I had always been a good student. I would not settle anything but an A, and when I got a 4.0 my first term ,a friend said to me, “That’s great, but you can only go down from there!” Suddenly, I was more driven than ever. My mom was worried about my social life. She was happy that I got good grades but had always told me there was more to life. What about faith? What about helping others? She encouraged me to go to church. She believed that weekly attendance was the answer to my poor social situation. Sometimes, I find myself being critical (挑剔的) of my mother’s simple ways. It’s difficult with busy schedules to go to church every Sunday. And while I admire my mom’s ability to help anyone in need, I plain that I do not have as much time as I wish to follow her example. Her simple rules have served her well, and though I don’t follow them as much as I should, they are there like a beacon(燈塔),calling for me to follow. 25. She dislikes the rules because they are meaningless to her. C. She supports the rules because they are suitable for her. D. She disapproves the rules because they are difficult to follow. C The Arctic(北極) will soon be free from ice, experts say. The change is bound to take place, but the global warming and climate change are changing the earth’s landscape rapidly, causing fear worldwide. Experts say that the Arctic sea ice is melting (融化) quite faster than expected and it can affect not just the region, but Earth in general. A scientist even says that next year, or maybe the year after that, the Arctic will be free of ice. Peter Wadhams said that the melting trend led to his statement. “Most people expect this year will see a record low in the Arctic’s summer sea-ice cover. Next year or the year after that, I think it will be free of ice in summer and by that I mean the central Arctic will be ice-free,” Peter Wadhams, director of the Scott Polar Institute in Cambridge, said in an interview with the Guardian. “You will be able to cross over the North Pole by ship,” Peter Wadhams added. He strongly believes that although some pieces of ice will remain, the Arctic basin may be free of sea ice in the next two years starting in the summer of 2017. Wadhams’ study says that melting sea ice will have a great influence on the planet since the sea ice is more capable of reflecting (反射) sunlight pared to water that can only reflect 10% of the sunlight. Once the sea ice melts, the water can only reflect a small amount of sunlight. This means that the Earth will receive and absorb more sunlight, making the planet even hotter. The year 2016 has already broken records of the hottest temperature ever recorded and the trend doesn’t seem to show any decrease in global warming. “It doesn’t look like the ice is healing and growing back,” Tom Wagner, NASA’s manager for the research said in a statement. Like Wadhams, scientists and researchers all over the world are lecturing around to educate people to help lighten global warming that has already changed the planet’s landscape. 28. What is the author’s attitude toward global warming and climate change? A. Indifferent B. Anxious C. Unbelievable D. Misunderstood 29. What can we know from the second paragraph? A. What experts say has caused worldwide fear and great anxiety. B. The melting of the Arctic sea ice only has a great effect on this region. C. The speed of the Arctic sea ice being melted is beyond expectation. D. It’s impossible that the Arctic will be free from ice in one or two years. 30. Why would the Earth bee even hotter if the sea ice melted? A. more water will cover the earth. B. there will be more hours of daylight. C. the water will reflect more sunlight. D. more sunlight would be taken in by the earth. 31. What is the passage mainly about? A. According to some experts, the Arctic may be free from ice soon because of global warming and climate change. B. The Arctic melting sea ice will affect the planet greatly. C. The Arctic will be free from ice in two years. D. Global warming are changing the earth’s landscape quickly. D There are many ways of defining(下定義) success. It is accurate to say that each of us has our own definition of success to the extent that each of us is responsible for setting our own goals and determining whether we have met these goals satisfactorily. Because each of us possesses unique differences in ability and favorable environments in which to express these abilities, it is necessarily true that we must define success broadly. For some people, simply being able to live their life with a minimum of suffering is considered a success. Think of the peace of mind of the poor shepherd who takes care of his sheep, enjoys his simple life with his family in the beauty of nature, and who is respected because he does a good job of achieving the goals expected of and accepted by him and his society. On the other hand, it seems that even though some people appear to be rich in material possessions, many of them seem to be miserable and consider themselves unsuccessful when judged by their own goals of success. Because not all ventures can be successful, one should not set unrealistic goals for achieving success, but if one has self-confidence it would be unfortunate to set one’s goals at too low a level of achievement. A wise counselor once said to a young man who was experiencing frustration with his own professional success: “You do not have to set your goal to reach the moon in order to have success in traveling. Sometimes one can be very successful merely by taking a walk in the park, or riding the subway downtown,” The counselor added, “You have not really failed and spoiled your chances for success until you have been unsuccessful at something you really like, and to which you have given your best effort.” 32. In the first paragraph, the author shows that ________are important in achieving success . A. their life is miserable B. they do not live in peace C. their goals are too low D. they are not rich enough by their own standards 34.We can learn from the last paragraph that__________. A. success means trying one’s best at what one really likes B. we should have high goals C. success means taking a walk in the park D. success means achieving great goals 35.
