Kaitlin Riffel was visiting her father at work – the Fresno Rescue Mission, a shelter for the homeless and those in need. “I never realized there were people in the world who didn’t have a home or food before,” recalled (回憶) Kaitlin, who is now 16. “I knew there was something I had to do about that.” At age 8, she started raising money to build a playground at Rescue the Children, a facility (機構(gòu)) in Fresno for women and children in need. ?It took me two years, but my sisters and I raised $365 (2,520 yuan),? Kaitlin said. ?We started small. We knew we wanted to do something to make a difference.” The amount jumped to $80,000 the following year after the girls teamed up with friends, and the playground was built in 2013. It inspired Kaitlin to found Kids on a Mission, a kid-powered nonprofit organization that has helped hundreds of people living in poverty in the US and abroad. The work overseas started when Kaitlin, then 13, visited El Salvador in Central America. There, she saw people starving (挨餓) and families living in shelters made of cardboard (紙板). “The rooms were smaller than my bedroom, but there would be eight people living in [each one],” Kaitlin recalled. “We also got to see the rivers that these people were drinking out of, and [they contained] dirty water.” Providing clean drinking water for people living in poverty is now a focus (焦點) for Kids on a Mission. Children and adult volunteers dig wells (井) and also help orphans (孤兒) by providing food and clothes. “Being able to see how much they are suffering but then to give them food – that’s life-changing for us,” Kaitlin said. Kids on a Mission is in the process of giving children larger leadership roles within the organization now that Kaitlin is a junior in high school. She may not play as big of a role in the organization if she moves away for college. “This young lady just understands that by giving and having a huge heart, she’s not only changing the hearts of people in this munity, she’s changing the world,” said Jim Yovino, Fresno County Superintendent of Schools. 24. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Kaitlin was inspired to help the poor when she worked at her father’s organization. B. Kaitlin succeeded in raising enough money for a playground with other people’s help. C. It took Kaitlin and her sister two years to raise $80,000 for Rescue the Children. D. Kaitlin started volunteering at Rescue the Children when she was 8 years old. 25. What can we learn about Kids on a Mission? A. It was founded by Kaitlin and her sister in 2013. B. It is a nonprofit organization aiming to end poverty in the US. C. It only recruits (招募) children volunteers from Kaitlin’s munity. D. It is now focusing on providing clean drinking water to the poor. 26. According to the article, Kaitlin ______. A. will continue to lead Kids on a Mission when in college B. is now working on improving her leadership skills C. has positively influenced people in her munity D. has received much financial support for her work from her family 27. A. call on readers to help people in need B. introduce the work of Kids on a Mission C. show that everyone can make a difference D. share Kaitlin’s story of helping the poor C Have you noticed that many of the clothes on the high street look the same these days? So how do young people manage to express their individual (個人的) style? We interviewed some Brits in different parts of the country. “Young creative people in the UK have always e up with ways to express their individuality through clothes. Punks added zips (拉鏈) and safety pins , and skaters buy chains (鏈條) from hardware shops to hang from their trousers. You don’t need money – you need imagination,” said Alexi, art student, Aldershot. Printing your own T-shirt is the easiest and most mon way to customise (定制) clothes. You don’t have to actually make a T-shirt. You can buy a cheap one and add an image (圖像) of your choice. “I used to make customised, multicoloured T-shirts for my friends using fabric (織物) paints. They looked a bit messy but sort of cool. A couple of years ago, my mate Simon made one with a picture of Obama dressed as Che Guevara. He still wears it in fact. It looks great,? said John, 25, Cheshire. Everyone knows that students don’t have a lot of money. That doesn’t have to be a problem if you’ve got a bit of imagination. “I used to make clothes sometimes when I was a student. Once I found a pair of trousers in a shop that I really liked, but I couldn’t afford them. I did a little sketch (素描) in a notebook, bought some fabric in the same colour and copied the trousers using my mum’s sewing machine (縫紉機). I loved it when people didn’t believe I had made them myself,” said Corrine, 31, Dundee. Buying second-hand or “vintage (復(fù)古的)” clothes is a fashion option for many young Brits. “I like to make or adapt (改造) my own clothes because I know that they will fit and that they’ll look good. I buy stuff like jackets, trousers and dresses in second-hand shops. You can be sure you will always have something original as well as cheap,” said Helen, 26, Nottingham. 28. According to Alexi, which of the following things best allows young people to express their individual style? A. Money. B. Creativity. C. Taste. D. Courage. 29. What does John think is a good way to express one’s individuality? A. Adapting vintage T-shirts. B. Buying multicolored T-shirts. C. Printing images on T-shirts. D. Adding zips and safety pins to T-shirts. 30. What makes Corrine proud of herself? A. Learning sewing skills from her mother. B. Making trousers by herself. C. Being able to afford expensive trousers. D. Wearing fashionable second-hand trousers. 31. What is the article mainly about? A. Why young people like to look different. B. The trend of customizing clothes in the UK. C. Popular clothes among young Brits. D. How young Brits show their personality through clothes. D Do you always struggle to understand others’ feelings? Perhaps you should listen to your heart. According to a team of scientists at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK, people who are more aware of their own heartbeat are better at understanding others’ emotions. Researchers have long suspected (懷疑) that this ability is important for understanding others’ thoughts and feelings. To test this theory, the British team asked 72 volunteers to count their own heartbeats without feeling a pulse (脈搏). This aimed to see how aware they were of the feelings inside their own bodies. Then, the volunteers were shown video clips of social interactions (互動), which tested their ability to read the minds of the characters. During the clips, they were asked questions that required an understanding of the emotions of a certain character – for example, “What is Sandra feeling?” In addition, they were asked questions that did not involve any emotions, such as “What is Michael thinking?” They were also asked non-social questions, like “What was the weather like that evening?” The results showed that those who had counted their heartbeats most accurately were better at answering questions relating to the characters’ emotions. However, there was no link between the ability to feel what’s going on inside your body and questions that did not involve any emotions. Punit Shah, lead author of the study, used an example to explain this: If your colleague Michael is rude toward Sandra in public, your body processes (處理) this by increasing your heart rate. This may make you feel anxious and allow you to understand that Sandra is embarrassed . “If you do not feel your heart rate increase, it may reduce your ability to understand that situation and respond (反應(yīng)) appropriately,” Shah told The Telegraph. Researchers believed their findings mean it could be possible to make people more empathetic by training them to listen to their hearts. This also lends support to the argument that feelings are, at the very least, deeply rooted in physical sensations (感覺). 32. What does the new study find? A. People are better at understanding others’ emotions than thoughts. B. People with quicker heartbeats are more sensitive to others’ feelings. C. The ability to feel your heartbeat is important for understanding others’ thoughts. D. Your ability to feel others’ emotions is related to your ability to feel your own heartbeat. 33. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the new study according to the article? A. The volunteers were asked to count their heartbeats while watching video clips. B. Researchers designed emotional, non-emotional and non-social questions. C. The volunteers were required to describe each other’s thoughts and feelings. D. Researchers trained the volunteers to listen to their hearts and observed them. 34. The underlined word “empathetic” in the second-to-last paragraph probably means ______. A. willing to accept ideas that are different from your own B. not influenced in any way by other people or things C. being able to understand others’ feelings D. willing to help those in trouble 35. What can be concluded from the last four paragraphs? A. We react to a situation more slowly when our heart rates increase. B. Physical sensations in our bodies are believed to cause emotional changes. C. Our ability to feel emotions is part of us and can’t be changed. D. How we feel has nothing to do with the state of our bodies. 第二節(jié) (共 5 小題;每小題 2 分,滿分 10 分) 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。 Last Sunday I was thinking about the difference between successful people and those who dont achieve anything significant. I made an interesting discovery. This difference may at first look obvious, but its quite opposite. 36 Everyone has a purpose behind their actions. If they dont, they wouldnt take action! 37 When they take action, at the back of their minds they think about success that this action is going to bring them. 38 Whats the purpose behind your actions? Do you work to thrive(成功)or to survive? Do you go to work to feed your family or to create an amazing lifestyle? Different purposes will result in pletely different life experiences. People who work to survive are the ones who fear that some unexpected bill will arrive. They go to bed worrying about money and unimportant things. They hate their employment but dont quit because they doubt their own abilities to create something greater. I know this kind of feeling because I was like that once. Thats a very unfortable state to be in because you are constantly worried about insignificant things. 39 Therefore, you cannot achieve anything great. Now there are some people who dont accept the "Life is hard" story and they are fuelled by an entirely different purpose. They work to thrive. 40 They have a beautiful vision and they take constant action to make that vision a reality. A. And they dont think about why something cannot be done. B. Such attitude invites great opportunities to you. C. It lies in what motivates people to take action. D. So let me ask you a few questions. E. And this makes you take even more or better quality actions. F. This state does not allow you to be creative. G. But successful people have a pletely different purpose behind the actions they take. In the doorway of my home, I looked closely at my 23-year-old son, Daniel.
