You can see some of the most interesting places in the city by getting on one of Londons tour buses or you can take a ride on the London Eye. This large wheel slowly takes you 135m above the River Thames. From the top you have wonderful views of the whole city. The River Thames is Londons main waterway. It has shaped the capitals landscape, history and geography. So one of the best ways of making sense of the city is to take a trip along the river. The clock tower of the House of Parliament (議會大廈), Big Ben, has bee one of the main symbols of London. The sound of the bell, which you can hear at the beginning of many television and radio programmes, has bee wellknown throughout the nation. No visit to London is plete without a look at the Tower of London, in the eastern part of the city. After Big Ben, the Tower may be Londons most visited tourist spot. It is Europes oldest palace and prison. Directly south is Tower Bridge, which is more than 100 years old. Among all the palaces in London, Buckingham Palace is the most famous. It has been the main London home of the royal family since Queen Victoria moved there in 1837. You can visit some of the rooms in August and September. Most mornings of the year you can watch the soldiers outside changing guards. About one hour by train out of London is the town of Windsor. Here you can visit another of the Queens homes — Windsor Castle, Europes biggest castle. Sightseeing in London is great, but it can get very tiring. So, the best way to start the day is to fill up on an English breakfast. For starters,_have an egg, bacon, sausages (香腸), tomatoes, mushrooms, black pudding and fried bread. Then finish off with toast and jam, and a large pot of tea. You can buy an English breakfast in nearly every hotel, and at many restaurants and cafes.Or you can sit outside one of the many roadside pubs and cafes in London, and simply watch the busy world go by. 1.Which of the following is not suggested as one of the best ways to make sense of London? Sharing bread or other foods is a mon human tradition that can promote unity and trust. Food can also have a specific meaning, and play a significant role in a family or cultures celebrations or traditions. The foods we eat—and when and how we eat them—are often unique to a particular culture or may even differ between rural (農(nóng)村的) and urban areas within one country. Sharing bread, whether during a special occasion (時刻) or at the family dinner table, is a mon symbol of togetherness. Many cultures also celebrate birthdays and marriages with cakes that are cut and shared among the guests. Early forms of cake were simply a kind of bread, so this tradition has its roots in the custom of sharing bread. Food also plays an important role in many New Year celebrations. In the southern United States, pieces of corn bread represent blocks of gold for prosperity (興旺) in the New Year. In Greece, people share a special cake called vasilopita. A coin is put into the cake, which signifies (預(yù)示) success in the New Year for the person who receives it. Many cultures have ceremonies to celebrate the birth of a child, and food can play a significant role. In China, when a baby is one month old, families name and wele their child in a celebration that includes giving redcolored eggs to guests. In many cultures, round foods such as grapes, bread, and moon cakes are eaten at wele celebrations to represent family unity. Nutrition is necessary for life, so it is not surprising that food is such an important part of different cultures around the world. 5.According to the passage, sharing bread ________. A.indicates a lack of food B.can help to develop unity C.is a custom unique to rural areas D.has its roots in birthday celebrations 6.What does the coin in vasilopita signify for its receiver in the New Year? Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (貼標(biāo)簽) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other. War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder. The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing.Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart. Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didnt notice Kate had sat up.She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine.
