All she’s ever wanted to do is to bee an elementary school teacher. However, Hipp has racked up(累計) $100,000 (about 0.67 million yuan) in student loan debt and isn’t able to earn enough through working as a part-time skating instructor and restaurant server tolive anywhere other than home. To some degree, multigenerational households have always been a part of American life. However, the number of adults who have been moving back in with their parents or never leaving home in the first place has been growing steadily. The Pew Research Center recently reported that 2016 was a milestone in the evolving living arrangements of young adults in the US. Until 2016, the most mon living arrangement for young adults was to be living in their own property as part of a couple. UBS Financial Services, a Swiss global financial services pany, released a report that even suggests one reason for the growing number of young adults still living at home could be that their family doesn’t want them to leave. The report shows that 74 percent of millennials(千禧一代) get some kind of financial support from their parents after college. Millennials see their parents as peers, friends and mentors(導(dǎo)師). In return, their parents happily provide financial support well into adulthood, helping fund everything for them. Stuart Hoffman, chief economist for the PNC Financial Group in the US, said “Although job growth for millennials since 2014 has improved, that doesn’t necessarily mean that millennials are starting to fly the nest, he said. “They may like living at home and being able to save money.” He added, “While it has held back household formation and purchases on things, they are probably traveling more and eating out more. I don’t know if it represents a change in moral values, it’s much more mon for adult children to live in their parent’s homes because it’s being part of the culture.” 1.What’s the purpose of Caitlin Hipp’s story? A. To prove the author’s view. B. To introduce her situation. C. To present the topic. D. To make readers rethink about the problem. 2.What does the underlined part (Paragraph1) probably refer to? A. live with parents B. live independently C. stay at home D. leave home 3.According to Hoffman, which of the following is true? A. It isn’t necessary for millennials to leave the nest. B. They can spend less money on their daily life. C. Moral values are changing gradually. D. Young adults are living in a different life style. 4.What’s the main idea of the passage? A. Why is the number of the millennial growing steadily? B. Why has the percentage of adults living with their parents been on the rise? C. Why are parents willing to help fund for young adults? D. Why do more adults treat their parents as peers, friends and guides? 【文章大意】本文是一篇說明文,主要介紹了在美國,現(xiàn)在和父母同住的年輕人的數(shù)量持續(xù)增加這一社會現(xiàn)象。 1.C 【解析】推理判斷題。根據(jù)第二段中的“However, the number of adults who have been moving back in with their parents or never leaving home in the first place has been growing steadily.”可知,文章開頭舉Caitlin Hipp的例子就是為了引出本文話題——越來越多的美國青年傾向于和父母同住。 3.D 【解析】細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)最后一段中的“it’s much more mon for adult children to live in their parent’s homes because it’s being part of the culture.”可知,霍夫曼認(rèn)為現(xiàn)在的年輕人和父母同住是一種很正常的社會現(xiàn)象,這是不同以往的,說明年輕人的生活方式發(fā)生了變化。 4.B 【解析】主旨大意題。根據(jù)文章內(nèi)容,特別是第二段中的“However, the number of adults who have been moving back in with their parents or never leaving home in the first place has been growing steadily”可知,本文主要介紹了在美國,現(xiàn)在和父母同住的年輕人的數(shù)量持續(xù)增加這一社會現(xiàn)象。 B What are your retirement plans? Keep working? Get more exercise? Or learn something new? You may put them on hold. There’s a chance that, sooner or later, you might have to move further than you were thinking, as far as Mars (火星). On Thursday, National Geographic will show the first ever Mars show home, giving earthlings an idea of what their life could look like on the Red Planet. Set in the notsodistant year of 2037, the iglooshaped structure could be the home of your future. It shows a house built using recycled spacecraft parts and Martian soil, called regolith, which has been microwaved into bricks. Some parts of the home are recognisable—kitchen, bedroom—but there are fundamental differences that are vital for human survival. As the Martian atmosphere is around one hundredth as thick as the Earth’s, people will need permanent shelter from the sun and society will move largely indoors. Most buildings will be connected by underground passages and the houses won’t have windows. The homes will have simulated solar lighting, or natural light that has been bent several times. Walls will need to be 10 to 12 feet thick, to protect people from dangerous rays that can pass through six feet of steel, and a double airlocked entrance to keep the home under proper pressure. “We don’t think of our houses as things that keep us alive, but on Mars your house will be a survival centre,” says Stephen Petranek, author of How We’ll Live on Mars. This is not just the stuff of scifi. “Ten to twenty years from now there will certainly be people on Mars,” Petranek says. “We’ve had the technology for 30 years to land people on Mars, but we haven’t had the will,” Petranek says. “But two main factors have pletely swung public attitudes.” The private panies’ participation has forced government agencies to up their game, and influential films such as Gravity and The Martian have caught society’s eye. 【解題導(dǎo)語】 本文主要對人類未來在火星上居住作了相關(guān)介紹。 1.What can we know about the show home from the text? A.It has no windows or doors due to security concern. B.Its design presents the idea of environmental protection. C.It has thick walls keeping the home under proper pressure. D.Its underground passages connect all the buildings together. B 解析:推理判斷題。根據(jù)第三段的第一句可推知,火星樣板房的設(shè)計采用了可回收的宇宙飛船上的一些部件,體現(xiàn)了環(huán)保意識,故選B。 2.What do the underlined words “put them on hold” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A.Put them off. B.Give them away. C.Carry them through. D.Take them seriously. A 解析:詞義猜測題。根據(jù)第一段的最后一句可推知,之前的列舉都可能被擱置下來,而去火星居住遲早會成為可能,故選A。 3.According to Petranek, what has sped up the process of sending people to Mars? A.The great influence of Mars show home. B.The development of related technology. C.The petition from private panies. D.The popularity of influential books on Mars. C 解析:細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)最后一段的“The private panies’ participation has forced government agencies to up their game”可知,Petranek認(rèn)為一些私人企業(yè)的參與促進(jìn)了送人類去火星居住這一設(shè)想的進(jìn)程,故選C。 4.What is the best title for the text? A.Living on Mars: Possible or Not B.Sending People to Mars: Yes or No C.First Ever Show Home: How Is It Made? D.Future Home on Mars: What Will It Be like? Dear Peter, I am writing to make a brief introduction to the student societies in our school, in which you show interest in your letter. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ What about the student societies in your school?
