Yet within two years,my parents’ marriage had broken down. After one particularly unpleasant fight,my mother left my father, taking me with her. With no family or friends, and in a country where she couldn’t even municate, she took me to Chinatown, the only area of Sydney she was familiar with. That night she laid me on a bench in Dixon Street, packing suitcases around us for security.I will never forget the despair in her face that night. At around 4 am,a group of four young Chinese men noisily exited a club nearby.I remember them falling silent as they saw us.They approached and asked my mother why she was sleeping on the streets with such a young child. My mum burst into tears as she told them our story.Without hesitating, they bundled me up,took our suitcases, and drove us to their students’ housing. In the weeks that followed, the men looked after us with a youthful enthusiasm.Being poor students living on their own for the first time, they simply knew how to cook in a clumsy way. However, they insisted that a child should have homemade meals. They quickly adjusted their lives around us,buying fresh food, cooking, teasing me to make me laugh, and advising my mum on how to sort out her life. Eventually,Mum reconciled(和解) with Dad and we moved back in with him, although they continued to split and make up several times. Gradually we lost touch with the men as we all moved on.But at every milestone of my life—graduations, entering university, getting a good job—I never forget that all of this was made possible because 22 years ago,a group of plete strangers took us in and shared everything they had to save us from life on the street. 21.Why did Mom and I stay in Dixon Street that night? A.We were waiting for the Chinese men. B.Mom knew nobody in Australia at all. C.It was safe to stay there for night. D.We had no other places to go. 根據(jù)第二段中的“With no family or friends, and in a country where she couldn’t even municate, she took me to Chinatown, the only area of Sydney she was familiar with. That night she laid me on a bench in Dixon Street,”從中可知作者的媽媽在這兒沒(méi)有家人或朋友,因此沒(méi)有地方可去,故D項(xiàng)符合題意。 22.How did the students feel the moment they saw us in the street? A.Ashamed. B.Shocked. C.Amused. D.Nervous. 根據(jù)第三段“I remember them falling silent as they saw us.They approached and asked my mother why she was sleeping on the streets with such a young child.” 23.What message is conveyed in the passage? A.There is no perfect husband or wife in marriage. B.It’s the timely help to someone in need that counts. C.It’s a great challenge for the Chinese to study abroad. The idea of different “cultural thought patterns” was first put forward by an American professor,Robert Kaplan,in the 1960s.He had been looking at the writing style of non-native students at his university in California. He found that the writing styles changed systematically, according to the cultural origins of the students. For example,in his opinion, native speakers of English usually went “straight to the point”.However, speakers of Semitic languages (such as Arabic and Hebrew) kept backtracking, and then returned to the point.Speakers of oriental languages (such as Chinese) were likely to approach the topic only little by little,as if they were moving around it in circles.Speakers of Romance languages (such as French and Spanish) were likely to stay away from the point, making it harder for readers to follow.Speakers of Slav languages (such as Russian) often included ideas which didn’t seem to be connected in any way to the development of the article. This view attracted a lot of attention as soon as it was expressed.People said it was not based on enough evidence at all,and it was biased because it was in support of English (which seemed to offer the “most useful” way of presenting the point of view).Russian students,in particular, did not agree with the idea Kaplan had of them. But Kaplan’s work at least reminded us that people from different cultural backgrounds do have different ways of presenting ideas,or telling stories, and that, even if these differences are difficult, and perhaps impossible to sort out, just knowing that they exist can help us to understand and appreciate each other better. 24.What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 2? A.To present his own idea. B.To introduce Robert Kaplan. C.To draw readers to the topic. D.To provide examples of the topic. 25.What does the underlined word “biased” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A.Wrong. B.Usual. C.Direct. D.Humorous. 26.Which of the following is the best title for the text? A.Thinking across Cultures B.Skills for Speaking Well C.Reading between Lines D.Differences in Cultures 答案A 解析主旨大意題。 C When I was a young girl living in Ireland,I was always pleased when it rained, because that meant I could go treasure hunting. As all of Ireland knows, treasure is hidden at the end of the rainbow. If you can discover the end of the rainbow, gold will be brought to you.So whenever it rained,I would look up in the sky and follow the curve of the rainbow to see where it ended.I never did unearth any treasure. As I got older, and started working, rainy days came to be just another hateful thing and my childhood dreams of finding treasure faded. But for a fortunate few,the dream even es true!Such is the case of Mel Fisher. His dream of finding treasure also began in childhood, while reading the great literature classics Treasure Island and Moby Dick. However, unlike me,he chased his dream and eventually managed to bee one of the most famous professional treasure hunters of all time, and for good reason. In 1985,he fished up the priceless goods of the sunken Spanish ship Atocha, which brought him an unbelievable $400 million dollars! After the ship sank in 1622 off the coast of Florida,Fisher, who ran a mercial rescue operation, was trying to locate the underwater treasure for over 16 years when he finally hit the jackpot! But finding and keeping the treasure wasn’t all plain sailing. After battling with terrible conditions at sea,Fisher then had to battle in the courts. In fact, the State of Florida took Fisher to court over ownership of the find. After more than 200 hearings,Fisher agreed to donate 20% of his yearly findings for public display, and so now there is a museum in Florida which displays hundreds of the objects which were saved from the Atocha. Archaeologists(考古學(xué)家) object to the fact that with mercial rescue operations like Fisher’s,the objects are sold and dispersed and UNESCO are worried about protecting our underwater treasure from what it describes as “robbery”. The counter-argument is that in professional,well-run operations such as Fisher’s,each piece is accurately and minutely recorded and that it is this information which is more important than the actual object, and that such operations help increase our wealth of archaeological knowledge.Indeed,as in Fisher’s case, they make history more accessible to people through museum donations and information on websites. 27.In Para.3,the underlined phrase “hit the jackpot” means according to the text. A.discovered the jackpot B.ran a rescue operation C.broke one of the objects D.found the treasure 答案D 解析細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)該段“...was trying to locate the underwater treasure for over 16 years when he finally hit the jackpot!” 28.It can be concluded from Paragraphs 4 and 5 that . A.UNESCO’s view is different from archaeologists’ B.people hold different views on the issue C.all rescue operations should be forbidden D.attention should be paid to the find’s educational value 答案B 解析推理判斷題。 29.Which of the following is true according to the passage? A.Fisher achieved his dream effortlessly. B.Fisher was accused of ownership of the treasure. C.Fisher was willing to donate his findings to the museum. D.Fisher found the underwater treasure shortly after the ship sank. 根據(jù)第三段“In fact, the State of Florida took Fisher to court over ownership of the find. After more than 200 hearings...” 30.The author’s purpose of writing the text is most likely to . A.persuade B.entertain C.inform D.describe 答案C 解析主旨大意題。 Best Way to Save Money Although the best way to save money can vary from person to person, depending on age, family size and other characteristics, there are still some easy things that all shoppers can do to keep more money in their bank accounts. ●Avoid impulse(沖動(dòng)的) purchases. G.For the most secondhand savings, check out groups like Freecycle. 31.E 根據(jù)上句“When you shop,a best way to save money is to have a plan in mind to help you avoid impulse purchases”。再結(jié)合空格下句“And you only carry the exact amount of cash...”。 33.F 根據(jù)“A high-quality pair of shoes will last longer than a bargain pair and prevent foot pain.Leaner...” 及空格下句“And there members offer unwanted items for free to anyone willing to pick them up.” 35.B 本段標(biāo)題為“Borrow instead of buy.”再根據(jù)“Borrow a tool from your neighbor”及“Check out the resources at your local library”可判斷,選項(xiàng)B“和一個(gè)朋友交換書(shū)”符合語(yǔ)境。 My Hero What does it mean to be a hero?I think a hero is someone who goes out of his way to make others happy. My hero is Mr.Wright,my chorus(合唱隊(duì)) teacher. When I was 12 years old,my grandparents passed away.I was really close to them, and losing them was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to 36 through.I couldn’t eat, sleep,or think;I felt like I couldn’t even breathe. It was as if my whole world had fallen down from under me,and I 37 into this huge hole of depression(抑郁). 38 I was battling depression,I was determined to make my high shool years the best of my life.It was difficult to be 39 ,but I had to try.I joined Women’s Choir.Mr.Wright was the choral director and he was so funny that the first day,I just knew I had made the best 40 of my life.
