Vitamin C, found in oranges and other fruit and vegetables, is important for wound repair. And the much-talked-about ‘sunshine’ Vitamin D, produced by the skin in response to UV light, is essential for strong bones. But Vitamin P? It might well have you scratching your head. And thats not surprising: the term was first coined in the 1930s to describe a small group of pounds that provide pigment(天然色素) to plants, and were believed to have health benefits. Fast-forward almost a century and these pounds are now better known as flavonoids. Today, scientists have identified between 4,000 and 6,000 different kinds and we now know they are responsible for many of the flavors and smells of fruit and vegetables and also that they protect them from invaders such as pests and bacteria. They are equally important nutrients for the body, helping maintain bones and teeth, and for the production of the protein collagen(膠原), which provides structure to blood vessels, muscles and skin. They are also said to help the body deal with some of the key drivers of illness, including oxidation(氧化), a natural process by which the bodys cells age and can bee damaged and defective(有缺陷的). That means they could help to protect against chronic diseases including cancer and heart disease. 1.Which of the following best explains “rattle off” underlined in Paragraph 1? A.Quickly say. B.Quickly pass. C.Quickly find. D.Quickly take. 2.What do we know about Vitamin P? A.We would scratch our head if we took it. B.It was made into a coin in the 1930s. C.People didnt think it beneficial in the past. D.It refers to the pounds also called flavonoids. 3.How many functions of Vitamin P for humans are mentioned? A.Four. B.Three. C.Two. D.One. 4.How does Vitamin P help slow the aging process? A.By dealing with oxidation. B.By maintaining bones. C.By strengthening muscle. D.By protecting against chronic diseases. 7、 There was a time when a trip to the supermarket in the United States often ended with a seemingly simple question from the cashier: “Paper or plastic?” Well, which type of bag would you choose? While all types of bags have some influence on the environment, it has long been supposed that paper bags are kinder. They are made from a renewable source, break down easily, burn without giving off thick smoke and can be recycled. However, the producing process behind paper bags uses more energy than that of plastic ones. How can this be true? Studies show that paper bag production requires four times as much energy as plastic bag production. And the amount of water used to make them is twenty times higher. Besides, the influence on forests is very serious. It takes about fourteen million trees to produce ten billion paper bags, which happens to be the number of bags used in the United States yearly. In terms of recycling, the idea that paper bags are more environment-friendly than plastic ones can be quickly discarded. Research shows it requires about 98% less energy to recycle plastic than it does paper. Even though paper bags might be more harmful than plastic ones, plastic still seems to be considered by governments as the more harmful of the two. In Ireland, for example, a tax has been introduced to discourage the use of plastic bags. People have to pay 22 cents for every plastic bag, and as a result, their use has dropped quickly. There’s no doubt that it makes more sense to reuse these bags. However, we don’t seem to be doing that at present. That may be because they fall apart quickly. If so, cloth bags are a better choice, but still, their production also has a bad influence on the environment. So what to do? How should we answer the question of “Paper or plastic?” It seems that we first need to ask ourselves one more general question: “What can I do to help the environment?” 1.The questions in Paragraph 1 are used to_______. A.express the author’s doubts B.tell readers how to save money C.introduce points for discussion D.show the kindness of the cashier 2.pared with plastic bags, paper bags_________. A.need more water to produce B.require less energy to recycle C.take more time to break down D.have less influence on forests 3.The underlined word “discarded” in Paragraph 3 probably means “_______”. A.shared B.given up C.discussed D.put forward 4.Which question does the author probably hope the cashier will ask? A.Paper or cloth? B.Paper or plastic? C.A small bag or big one? D.A new bag or your own one? 8、 passion (同情) is a desire within us to help others. With effort, we can translate passion into action. An experience last weekend showed me this is true.I work part-time in a supermarket across from a building for the elderly. These old people are our main customers, and it’s not hard to lose patience over their slowness. But last Sunday, one aged gentleman appeared to teach me a valuable lesson. This untidy man walked up to my register (收款機) with a box of biscuits. He said he was out of cash, had just moved into his room, and had nothing in his cupboards. He asked if we could let him have the food on trust. He promised to repay me the next day. I couldn’t help staring at him. I wondered what kind of person he had been ten or twenty years before, and what he would be like if fortune had gone his way. I had a hurt in my heart for this kind of human soul, all alone in the world. I told him that I was sorry, but store rules didn’t allow me to do so. I felt stupid and unkind saying this, but I valued my job. Just then, another man, standing behind the first, spoke up. If anything, he looked more pitiable.“Charge it to me,” was all he said. What I had been feeling was pity. Pity is soft and safe and easy.passion, on the other hand, is caring in action. I thanked the second man but told him that was not allowed either. Then I reached into my pocket and paid for the biscuits myself.I reached into my pocket because these two men had reached into my heart and taught me passion. 1.The aged gentleman who wanted to buy the biscuits_______ . A.promised to obey the store rules. B.forgot to take his credit card with him. C.hoped to have the food first and pay later. D.could not afford anything more expensive. 2.Which of the following best describes the old gentleman? A.Kind and lucky B.Poor and lonely C.Friendly and helpful D.Hurt and disappointed 3.Why did the author refuse the old gentle man’s request first? A.He wanted to keep his present job. B.He felt no pity for the old gentleman. C.He considered the old man dishonest. D.He expected someone else to pay for the old man. 4.What lesson did the author learn from this experience? A.Wealth is most important in older age. B.Helping others is easier said than done. C.Pity is better gained through practice. D.Obeying the rules means more than passion. 七選五 9、根據短文內容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。 What is your way to be happy? There are many ways of staying happy.
